Last Place Wisdom: 2018 Superbowl Special!
It didn't feel right leaving my final thoughts on the 2018 season being my film rankings, as engrossing as they were (although not engrossing enough for John to get around to sharing his response...JK lol 😉). So in that spirit, and with the championship belt being handed out shortly (let's be serious, Clarke might as well just leave it in his bedroom), it felt like a good idea to wrap up the 2018 fantasy season.
First of all, Congratulations to Clarke on pulling it off and winning back-to-back TFLOEG Championships. Clarke has created a fantasy juggernaut, not only staying at the top of the league standings (I'll testify to how hard that is), but finding a way to get over the hump and win in the playoffs (John and Shayne will testify to how hard that is). I spoke last year how after losing to Clarke, it pushed me to step my game up (that backfired spectacularly), and he raised the bar once again. While winning any championship is due partly to fortunate luck, Clarke has had some of that these past 2 years, I think it's clear that he's a remarkably good judge of fantasy talent. It's caused me to reevaluate a few of my own fantasy ideas, which maybe I'll share with you in a pre-season post, or maybe I'll just keep to myself to try and get a competitive advantage. In any case, Clarke was the team to beat all season long and we weren't up to the challenge.
On that note, I had more faith in Mike all playoffs long than the consensus opinion, and I like to think I was partially validated for it. Mike did everything he could to pull it out and beat Clarke, and if it wasn't for some unfortunate lineup decisions he would have accomplished it. It was the perfect way to end the season, and very fitting for a Championship game. Mike might have come up just short, but hopefully he can feel good about the results of the season. It might feel rough sacrificing some future for the shot to win now, and coming up just short, but I think it was the right move for him and I'll support any owner willing to do whatever they can to win if they think they have a shot.
Mr. Manager of the Year
Clarke is the Mr. Manager of the Year, he didn't make a ton of moves, but he made just enough; and he didn't really have to because he drafted so well. Mike is a deserving runner up, and he proved that you can win without star running backs. I was of the opinion that you needed stars at RB to win, but then the championship game involved Jamaal Williams, Doug Martin, Kalen Ballage and Tevin Coleman, so maybe conventional wisdom is all wrong. Of course, anything we think we might know about how to win might be thrown out the window next season after we MQMA. There's an opportunity for an enterprising owner to shake things up next year, and as John has already made known, the 2019 season has already begun.
Super Bowl Party
As one of the few group events that gets a good portion of the league coming out to it, I still love the annual party. When you consider the best meals of our lives are possibly behind us, any chance you get to enjoy each other's company with some good food is a positive one. I'm a little worried that not all of the details around the food are properly worked out at this point, but I'm sure it will all come together in the end.
As to the game itself, who really cares about the outcome? This is a case where I'm rooting for the Rams despite the fact more people will be happy that they win, because justice demands Patriot fans get to take part in as much misery as possible over the foreseeable future. Hopefully it's an entertaining game, if not at least I'll be able to chat about sports justice and the psychology behind me rooting for maximum pain and suffering with Aaron and John (and hopefully Pastor Dave can tie in some sweet movie references...like I'm a sports Inspector Javert (which would get John doubly excited given it would be an opening to discuss movie musicals)).
