Last Place Wisdom: Week Two - Racist Green Frogs

You always go into the season with such great expectations, only to have those hopes and dreams quickly shattered. This goes in more ways than one, as my hope was that once my events for the year were taken care of, my work would allow me plenty of time to research and write for fantasy football. However when you're co-worker quits and you get burdened with all of his responsibilities for the foreseeable future, that kind of throws a wrench into those plans. To answer the burning questions; there is no scandal with the CCDA leading to Blake's resignation (that I can tell you about(*John voice* "Oh baby"(wink))). But now I get to manage a theatre, attempt to keep track of all the finances with this place, as well as do my regular job. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the hours and am excited for the opportunity, but sometimes things just don't go as you expect.

Week One was like that in a lot of ways. Despite getting the win, I don't feel very good about my team this year. Last Thursday evening, as Demariyus Thomas is putting up pedestrian numbers and Devin Funchess is being overlooked for Benjamin, I had a bad feeling creep over me that maybe my team wasn't as good as I had hoped. With poor games from Lacy and Freeman on Sunday, this feeling intensified. One of the things about my team that was brought up on the podcast, is that my team is basically Brown and Hopkins and then not too much else; Week One did nothing to change that opinion. I don't love my bench at all, and with Thomas banged up this week I don't feel great with any of my options for the flex position. I'm trying not to over react too heavily to one week, but I don't feel too good right now considering my win.
The face of white supremacy in America

The only other thing I have to say about the win, is thanks Steve for not playing any of the guys that I was so excited about on your team; Manning, Gordon, Fitzgerald and Sexy Ameer Abdullah, as some combination of those players would have beaten me easily. However, I'm not too hard on him as other than the fact he should have started Manning instead of Taylor, he probably went with the same roster I would have going into week one.

And now for some rapid fire thoughts on the league after one week

  • Travis surprised me, although I never thought his team was going to be as bad as some opinions may have held. If Brees and Cooks can keep this connection, and the KC backfield doesnt turn into a confusing time-share, maybe Travis will make some noise.
  • Todd Gurley has me worried, which in turn should cause some amount of worry for Clarke's team when you combine it with Dez Bryant. Clarke should have been Hillary Clinton cruising to victory, but if he loses to Curtis it'll be more like Hillary Clinton "stumbling" (aka passing out and getting thrown into a van).
  • John needs to cool it on the Titans a little bit. Henry is going to be a stud later in the year, but at John's flex right now is going to cost him games.
  • Is Dawson going to pull a last year; come out of the gate on fire and then die out down the stretch? Luck, Forte and Murray were the key to Dawson's big week, but might have trouble lasting a whole season.
  • Shayne won on the strength of his kicker, which is fitting. Shayne's team just did Shayne's team things, which should be good enough to get him a top 4 spot going into playoffs.
  • Match of the week for week 2 should be Shayne and Stan, whoever wins this one is going to take the early lead as the team to beat this year I think.
  • Things to watch: John's potential at going 0-2 and Curtis' potential of going 2-0. Neither of these teams have had what you would call "in-between" seasons, either they finish at the top or the bottom of the standings. If the trend holds, it could make for an interesting year.
  • The matchups of the 0-1 teams will be interesting to me. No one likes to start 0-2, yet there will be 2 pretty decent teams guaranteed to be in that position given the matchups.
Mr. Manager of the Week Award

It's tough giving out this award after just one week since you don't want to over react. I like Steve's pickup of Williams in San Diego, he's the highest upside guy I could foresee, but it's too early to tell what kind of returns he will get. With that being the case, the award for Week One will have to go to Shayne for choosing to start Willie Snead out of all of his other options. While getting 17 from his kicker helped, it was Snead's 27 that pushed him over the top against Aaron.

Papa John's Pizza Emo Shoutout of the Week

I really like Keenan Allen as a player, but the guy just can't stay healthy. Curt may have won this week, but losing his #1 WR for the year is really tough for his championship aspirations. This seems like it might be Keenan Allen's theme song, so this one goes out to you

On the next Last Place Wisdom
  • Week 2 is done, meaning now it is time to over react.
  • I trigger John again in some way (likely by suggesting Jeff Lemire just ripped of Fall Out Boy like how Fall Out Boy ripped off the Simpsons)
  • We get some sweet Simpsons pictures as the decides to stop being Broadway Bros and BBM messages on Sunday instead.
