Last Place Wisdom: Week 4 - TFLOEG Wedding Spectacular
I like weddings. I like the food, getting dressed up, what they stand for and the way they bring everyone together. In particular, I like TFLOEG weddings, so you can bet that I'm pretty pumped for this weekend.
I think part of the reason I like TFLOEG weddings so much, is because my championship was won while celebrating Dawson and Jessica's wedding. It has fond memories for me for that reason, among others, as it was also the first time that Aiden really made any sort of appearance in the group. If I remember correctly, it also happened to be the first time that I was able to meet Kristine, which I think is an interesting fact.
Why am I saying all this about weddings? I don't really know, other than I need an open to the blog this week and this is what happens to be on my mind. Once again, the week seems to fly by and before I know it I'm running out of time to write down my thoughts on the League.
I really never expected to be 3-0 at this point in the season. I got lucky in my first 2 matchups, facing some of the teams who ended up having weak performances. That had me really questioning my team overall. This last week, my team finally decided to put it all together, but thanks to Coby Fleener I was convinced I was going to be losing the game to Curt until the very end, when Atlanta decided to keep feeding Freeman the ball even when they didn't really need to. All that being said, this year for once my faith in my team finally matches my record, and I feel pretty good going forward.
While many things in the league are starting to make more sense, other things seem to be as crazy as ever.

While many things in the league are starting to make more sense, other things seem to be as crazy as ever.
- Steve's team finally looked as good as I was expecting, and it's going to be an interesting 2 weeks as he plays Clarke and Dawson. He could easily go on a run or end up 1-4 and in a tough position.
- Curtis lost a tough one, and in my opinion he's in a better position than in Tier 4 of the power rankings. Frankly he needs Tate to improve and it would probably help if he dropped a Pittsburgh WR for a different, higher upside WR, but he has the best WR in the league, the best 2 QBs and Enunwa is going to end up as a top waiver pickup this year. If Perkins can get himself some playing time it'll help Curtis' position out as well. Better things are ahead.
- Andrew definitely has to be the surprise of the season so far, as I was convinced that he would be at the bottom of the league, but he was right on Michael, Graham and Cruz and I while I don't think he will make the playoffs I think he's going to play everyone tough all season.
- Part of me was hoping that the Boner Bowl would be a couple of teams fighting for their first wins, but John had to go and ruin that.
- I find John and Travis' trade interesting. Is Travis feeling some success and making a push for the playoffs this season? Is John resigning himself to next year and trading away so much depth from this year's team in exchange for youth? Or maybe it's just a good football trade. Booker ends up being the key to this trade I think, if he can become a starter and keeper for John I think it's a good trade, otherwise John gave up too much for a guy he shouldn't have traded in the first place.
- What's with this league and trading guys, only to trade back for them a few weeks later?
- Speaking of pre-season predictions, but this just goes to show the problem with assuming too much before any games are even played. In the opposite end of the spectrum from Andrew is Clarke, who was a pretty clear favourite to finish at the top of the standings. Clarke is still a good team, but with Dez injured, Wilson potentially playing through injury all season, and Gurley really looking like he is going to struggle, things are not going to be a cakewalk for Clarke this year.
Mr. Manager of the Week Award
The anti-Manager of the week award almost went to myself, as switching out the Ravens for the Bengals at the last minute nearly cost me the game. This is a tough award to give this week, as a large number of transactions and close games really stressed the managerial talent in the league. For this week, I think it has to go to John for not letting his Derrick Henry love get in the way of putting forward his best roster this week.
The Papa John's Pizza Emo Shoutout of the Week
Curtis, Shayne and Andrew all lost close games, and they deserve some comment in this space this week. However, the only team I can realistically highlight this week is Mike; as the only 0-3 team in the league at the moment he's suffering to a larger extent than anyone else. With a rash of injuries and very few bright spots, Mike is in a tough spot. However, Mike knows better than anyone how things can turn around, and that might start with Terrell Pryor who I think is going to be a bright spot for the rest of the season. It was a good week to have the #1 waiver wire choice. To help ease your suffering...this one's for you.
Coheed and Cambria wouldn't be at the top of my list when thinking of Emo songs/bands, but they're a strong sleeper choice. Also, it really struck me just how dated a lot of things in the video seem....the mid-2000s were a good time, or not depending on where you stand.
On the next Last Place Wisdom
- I'm busy discussing the numerous trades, and hopefully some 3ways, that went down at the Oliphant/Duquette wedding.
- I remember why there was no podcast this week and give Travis some empathy rather than assuming they are all just a bunch of slackers.
- I start accepting submissions for guest authors who want to fill in on LPW while I'm in Ontario. Remember, I started writing the blog and won the league...it might be a good way to turn around your fortune for a few weeks.
