Last Place Wisdom: Week 2 - Well that surprised me
So Shayne and I are in Brazil waiting for the crew from the Fantasy Focus 06010 Football podcast to show up. Don't ask me why I'm with Shayne, don't ask me why we're with the crew from the Fantasy Focus, and don't ask me what we're doing in Brazil. I don't think it had anything at all to do with fantasy football, to be honest I don't really remember too much beyond the vague outline I have just described. What I do remember is that somehow the vehicle Shayne rented for us belonged to Gerard Butler, which pissed me off because it wasn't a very nice vehicle. Then out of nowhere, 50 Cent drove up and was like...
For some reason fantasy football season seems to give me the weirdest dreams.
While the dream might have been weird, it was probably better than the fantasy football nightmare that I had on Monday (to quote John on that one). I was feeling pretty good going into Monday night, only to see my remaining players crap the bed while Steve had his best day of the week. It always sucks to lose, and I think it sucks even more week one. If you're going to lose however, might as well lose to the team that had the best score of the week, and to be honest I'm feeling pretty good about my team this year. The only real weak spot on my team in week one was what I like to call the crapshoot positions (K, D/ST and IDP). While there is a slight amount of strategy that can go into picking these positions, it is hard to predict accurately and do it week after week, meaning I am not worried at all about whether these positions of mine will be able to match up with the rest of the league this year. Ignore these 3 positions and I outscored John, Andrew and Dawson, so the variance involved should even itself out.
You could say that Monday night surprised me, which inspired me for this week's posting. I'm not sure who all noticed, but in last week's posting I wrote "it wouldn't surprise me" on 3 points in a row. When I read back through the post, this drove me crazy. I know it's very common to develop phrases that one uses over and over, but it leads to better writing to get rid of these if possible. Unfortunately I committed the cardinal sin of writing and did not go through to edit my work once I was done, but despite weakening the quality of my post it has given me a direction for the blog this year. Rather than recap and preview an even greater number of matchups each week, I'm going to look at a few things that surprised me about the past week and discuss a few things that wouldn't surprise me about the upcoming week.
Well That Surprised Me
Steve, you took Carlos Hyde late enough to be valuable, despite not getting anything out of him last season. Now you're reaping the rewards. This happened out from under the noses of 2 big 49ers fans as well, which only adds to the accomplishment. I think this could be franchise defining, in the same way Lacy is for me and Bell is for Dawson. That deserves an award.

Well That Surprised Me
- Anyone who has paid any attention at all knows how much I was talking up Clarke's team, and week one did absolutely nothing to vindicate my position. I still believe in Clarke's team, I think it's built in the same vein as Dawson's and we know how well that worked. Jeffery and Cobb are his dependable WR stars and core of the team, he just needs Gurley or Yeldon to become his Le'Veon Bell. My belief in Clarke's team had a lot to do with Manning being a top 5 QB once again, and that might be totally wrong. In any case, I think better things are to come.
- I wasn't expecting Curt to put up the points he did in Week 1. Ellington and Allen were 2 guys I traded Curt 2 seasons ago, and I've always liked their talent. Unfortunately Ellington is hurt, but thankfully Curt took David Johnson. Curt put up 99 points despite a 0 from Jackson, so he could be competitive when Bryant and Spiller come back.
- Scraps is another team who surprised...he would've won if only he started Rivers instead of Manning, and he got a little unlucky on how bad some of his better players performed. Last season's late run from Mike showed him the value of being active on the waiver wire, and I'm happy to see Mike carry that over to this season as well. Now if only he doesn't lean just so heavily on the Giants.
- On that point, I'm surprised by how badly the Giants, Vikings and Jaguars performed in week 1. I really was expecting some big things from the Giants offense this year, any maybe they'll turn it around. Despite my like for the offense, I was a little surprised by how highly ODB was on most rankings this year. He was a top 10 guy for a lot of experts, but I saw him as a candidate for a bit of a regression, his late season run was absolutely crazy after all. He should still be good, but maybe not as good.
- Aaron took Karlos Williams with his waiver pick, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him become an every week startable guy by the end of the season. It was a good move for a team that needs to hit a home run to become relevant.
- It surprised me to see so many TE's do so well in week 1, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the TE pool go back to being it's frustrating, whack-a-mole self in week 2. I'd be happy if I'm wrong.
- It wouldn't surprise me if one of Travis, Curt or Aaron pull off an upset this week. If this season is going to be all about parity, I think upsets will get more common.
