Last Place Widsom: Go TFLOEG, it's your birthday!
Draft day might be the best day of the fantasy year, but the official start of a new season is a pretty close second. All of the dreaming and speculating, all of the hopes and dreams that are present after the draft, none of that means anything once the actual games start and points start becoming real. This could lead to heartbreak when one of your star players gets an early ACL injury (or is arrested for abuse), or the dreadful realization when it becomes clear one of your dependable starters no longer has what it takes to be a consistent NFL players. It can also lead to exultation when the player you took a late round flyer on shows all of the skills you hoped he had, or when the RB you drafted that was part of a time share shows himself to be his team's clear #1. Regardless of what happens however, the start of a new season means excitement, which I feel confident in saying is a big part of the reason we all put ourselves through this every year. 16 weeks will fly by in a hurry, and we'll soon be left with the long break waiting for the draft, so let us enjoy it while we can....and to help us set the mood for another season, here's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
So I have no real excuse as to why I didn't do a full on draft review sometime last week, other than to say I guess I just wasn't feeling it. I was probably just waiting a little closer till the start of the season to write a post, and if I did one immediately after the draft was thinking that I would have nothing to write about. My fears would have been unfounded I think, since I can't remember the league waiver wire ever being this busy for the season has actually started. It's nice to see people be so active at such an early date, and it just goes to show how hard everyone is working to make their rosters as solid as possible. It should mean good things for this season.
There's not much for me to predict when it comes to the matchups this week before games are actually played, but I do want to touch a bit on the outcome of the draft. It turns out I'm a decent prognosticator, and in selecting best picks from last draft I ended up not totally embarrassing myself on 6 out of 10 teams. Despite being able to bat a solid 60%, I'm not going to attempt that again this year. I'm not sure if this is going to be a year long feeling from me, but rather than try to make predictions and insightful analysis, I'm feeling more on the lines of wanting to pump people up the same way that hearing your favourite hot jam come on the speakers will get the people going. Since this week is all about excitment, I'm going to go through the one player on each roster that I am most excited about this year. This might not end up being the best player, but it's the one that I'm going to be keeping an eye on as the season progresses
The Keith-glorious Basterds - Antonio Brown may be my boy, but talking about him here wouldn't accomplish what I'm trying to get at. Instead, I want to highlight Teddy Bridgewater. He's a guy that I wanted to draft last year, but ultimately passed on in favour of what I thought would be a more sure thing. Overall, I'm pretty pumped to see him progress this year, and would not at all be surprised if he ended up passing Brees as my starter by the end of the season.
The Fear Boners - John has a couple of guys to be excited about, but one guy in particular stands out. Going into the draft I was excited about the possibility of ending up with a QB duo of Sam Bradford and Teddy, and I would not at all be surprised if Bradford was a top 5 QB this season. Maybe he'll get hurt and all will be well, but I'll be a little disappointed if he plays as well as I think he might.
Layeth the Smaketh Down - Curt has a couple of guys I'm excited about watching. Jerrell Freeman was my late round defensive player if everyone else I was interested in got taken early. I'm also excited to see if Martavis Bryant can take a step from what he did last season. I hate having too many players from one team, otherwise he would've been someone I considered.
Sideliners - I'm repeating myself, but I'm excited about Philly. Nelson Agholor just got taken sooo early for an unproven rookie, which I think has to do with the uncharacteristically good seasons put out by rookies last year. I've always liked Doug Martin, so seeing if he can regain the form that made him a star is going to be interesting to watch. I would not be surprised at all.
oh that's nasty - John is probably sure I'm going to say Ameer Abdullah here, but I'm actually more excited about Tyler Eifert. I don't know if I've mentioned it yet on the blog, but I hate the TE position. After the couple of stars, everyone else drives me crazy. Eifert has a chance to distinguish himself from the TE middle class, and while it might not benefit me this year, would mean good things for the position going forward.
Las Vegas Posse - Can I just say I'm excited about Clarke's entire team? From the moment Peyton Manning fell to him, I've liked his chances at not just making the playoffs but seriously competing this season. He doesn't have a lot of depth at the moment, but once Todd Gurley comes back from his injury I like his chances a lot (he's another player I'm excited about, as much as St. Louis RBs have driven me crazy these past couple of seasons).
Clipboard Jesus - John Brown, John Brown, John Brown. I think Andrew, John and myself were all excited about this guy, and I had resigned myself to the fact that he was going to go way earlier than I was preparing to take him. Thankfully Andrew has so many potential keepers, Brown could easily be thrown back to draft last season.
No punt intended - I have to go with Tevin Coleman here. I've always kinda liked Atlanta, and whenever someone has the chance to become a starting RB in the league it's worth watching.
BISP - John might hate Mike's team, but I'm excited to see if it can outperform those expectations. Mike is the team of backups, and will be praying for RB injuries. I think Maclin has a good year, and he gives Mike a decent WR duo.
NINERS - One of my sleepers to watch this year was Eddie Royal, who I think could have a big year given the injuries in Chicago. Stan might never end up starting him because of his depth, but he could be decent trade bait in any case.
NFL Owner - I think Shayne has a very good team, but looking at his roster no body really stands out as truly exciting me. I guess to really break it down, I'm excited about the fact that someone might actually start Darren McFadden this year. He could be a top 10 RB by the end of the season, and that is both awesome and terrifying.
My Ball Zach Ertz - I must say, I enjoy the new name much better than Aaron's last one, even if I don't think he came up with it all on his own. I'm excited to see Andre Williams amount to nothing this year, but I think both Jordan Matthews and Allen Robinson are worth getting excited about. Last year, my goal was to get as many 2nd year WRs as I could. This year, I only ended up with Davante Adams, so watching all the guys I would've liked to take will be fun to watch, and will help me to see if it's a strategy really worth pursuing further.
The next time I write for the blog, Wins and Losses will be in the record, and that's truly worth getting excited about.
