Last Place Wisdom: Week Five - No Wings for Me
Well, one thing is clear after an embarrassing loss for my team last week; there will certainly be no wings for the Keith-glorius Basterds. Whenever I've played the top teams in the league, my team has found a way to crap the bed. While losing is never fun, I was really hoping to at least make things close against John, as he's clearly the class of the league and the team that I always try to compare myself with. I was feeling good after Eddy Lacy went off on Thursday night, but unfortunately my team couldn't manage to score a touchdown after that point (On the plus side, I'm feeling vindicated and better about mine and John's Eddy Lacy side bet). Even worse, I got to watch Rashad Jennings mess up his knee, knowing that John is the beneficiary of Andre William's increased playing time, after he decided to be a dick and wouldn't trade him to me earlier in the season (JK LOL. All is good in Fantasy, gotta keep getting dem wings).
While I will have to wait until this week to hopefully get back on track, both Curtis and Andrew managed to turn their seasons around with big wins over Aaron and Stan. While Andrew didn't have a great game, it was enough to win and keep pace with the last playoff spot. Curtis managed to put up the 3rd most points in the league, and his team is starting to be what I thought they were going into the season, which I admit, it just a shameless way for me to reference this:
Curtis' point total says he should be in a playoff spot right now, and it's only bad luck that hedoesn't have at least 2 wins at this point. After myself, he has my favourite 1-2 QB punch, and if he could get away from starting Percy Harvin every week I like his overall roster as well. He has games against Dawson, Mike and Shayne coming up, before back-to-backs against the undefeated duo. If he can win at least 2 of his next 3, he will have a shot at the playoffs.
Mike was soooo close to pulling out a win against Shayne, and I was pulling for him hard since it would have kept me ahead of Shayne in the standings. Mike's weak point has to be at WR, where his draft picks have disappointed severely. I expected more from Crabtree in particular, which was a mistake since San Fran kinda sucks, but the fact Newton is no longer running has turned him from a star QB into a totally average one. In all, it's been a tough season for Mike, and if I'm him, pretty soon I start looking at turning Foster, Gronkowski and Gates into upside guys for next year, and look at picking up some of the rookie WRs available on the wavier wire.
Mr. Manager of the Week Award
This week, the award will be going to Shayne for picking up and starting Brian Hoyer. The Browns are better known for being a factory of sadness than for playing solid football, but Hoyer managed to lead them to a franchise record comeback on Sunday. In another league, I picked up and started Fitzpatrick over Hoyer, which was the wrong move, but Shayne was smarter than that apparently.
Random Thoughts
5 weeks in, I think there are a number of surprise players who we can kind of determine if they are for real or not. Here are my thoughts at early season performers who no one really expected, but I think are for real:
Week Four Preview
The Keith-glorious Bastards vs Aaron-PRIMETIME-Clapperton - Overall, I have a 3-4 record against Aaron. Given that Aaron has not had a strong team the entire time he's been in the league, this is proof that he always plays me tough. Luckily for me, I don't have to face off against Brees, but none of my players really have great matchups either. The gamechanger could be the Indy-Houston Thursday night games. If history is any guide, Thursday night games this year have all been absolute blowouts for one team or another. If one team is going to be on the winning end of a blowout, I'll take the team with Andrew Luck at QB over Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The Fear Boners vs NFL Owner - The game of the week for Week 6. I know Shayne and John talk a lot of football throughout the week, so again I'm sure each team would really love to take this one. Shayne has to be frustrated with Calvin Johnson and his injury status, since if he plays you basically have to start him. What might be best is if Calvin misses a game and gets completely healthy, as it would allow Shayne to plug in someone else instead. If Palmer is healthy against Washington, I think Shayne plays him, meanwhile John is watching the health of Teddy Bridgewater. No Jimmy Graham for John, but I think Andre Williams has a big game against Philly.
BISP vs Sideliners - Watch Mike pull out his first win against undefeated Steve. Newton has a horrible matchup against a typically strong Cincy pass-D (just not last week for me), and Locker, if he plays, has a great matchup against Jacksonville. Steve likely just keeps on rolling, but he doesn't have Charles and has to rely on Asiata against a tough Lions D instead. His Broncos likely blow out a horrible Jets team, and he has 2 good QB matchups.
oh that's nasty vs What are the Chances -This is another big game, because at least in my mind, Curtis and Dawson have, or should have, a fantasy rivalry. Dawson needs to get away from Toby Gerhardt and take a chance on one of Tennessee's RBs or on Welker. Curtis has a lot riding on the Seattle-Dallas game, and needs to decide what to do with Percy Harvin. He had 3 TDs called back last week, but has been tough to trust overall, and Quick, Wayne or Jackson have been more consistent. I like the winner of this game to take one of the final 2 playoff spots at the end of the season, while the loser will be in tough.
NINERS vs RW Throws a Sexy Deep Ball - Another huge Altus Geomatic matchup this week. I thought both of these teams would be in the top 4, but at this point they are fighting tooth and nail for the last playoff spot. Stan's RBs are in real trouble, no Peterson, no Ball, Morris against a tough Arizona D, having to rely on Hillman and Oliver. Both of these last guys could have big games, but they are not established players and could do absolutely nothing going forward. Andrew squeaked out a win last week, but still hasn't looked good. I like him to win this week however, as I think Brady's good game last week was a fluke rather than sign of things to come.
